There are so many strong female's that have contributed to music in the past or still are today. On International Women's Day events across the city are celebrating those women.

Celebrating Women in Sound

Collective, Sisters Akousmatica will perform at an evening concert from 8pm in the Great Hall at Goldsmiths University. Dr Julia Drouhin and Phillipa Stafford are responsible for projects about collective radio practices and 'auditory-spatial exploration' that support the voices of women in the public arena.

Tonight's show will include a performance of Chapter One: Signal fantôme ~ Onde fantom, which will examine radio broadcast as a vehicle for reimagining women's role in sound (art, music and broadcast). We found an example of their work to sample.

Hip-Hop Karaoke - International Women's Day Special

We love Queen of Hoxton at the best of times, particularly sitting in the massive tent at the top of the building with a lovely beverage. Tonight, however, we'll be trekking down from the roof garden to perform a track from a hip hop queen (I'm thinking Missy Elliot is on the cards).

Especially for International Women's Day, the set list will be entirely female hip hop artists. So get your gals together after work and stroll on down. Karaoke will be from 7pm.

Royal College of Music Recital

From 6:00pm tonight the Recital Hall at the Royal College of Music will be packed with women celebrating the work of groundbreaking female composers. Between performances on the night there'll also be readings from influential female writers such as Emily Dickinson and Virginia Woolf. The full programme is available via the event page and includes vocals from Pauline Viardot, Clara Schumann, Judith Weir and more.

Gem's Jams

The Royal Festival Hall at Southbank Centre will on Sunday play host to Gem's Jams. Artist in Residence, Gemma Cairney will be brining her Margate club night to the centre for a Women of the World special. They promise a night of 'beats, boogying, rhymes and rhythms'.

As well as DJ sets from Radio 1Xtra's Jamz Supernova and South London collective BORN N BREAD, there will be spoken word performances and poetry from the likes of Carmina Masoliver and Selina Nwulu.

Alternatively...

If none of these take your fancy there are a whole host of non-music related events taking place across the city from today over the next week. Go and celebrate women in any way you see fit. Time Out have a good list of other events.
